This week, Year 2 have been learning all about how to follow a set of instructions carefully. To bring our learning to life, the children worked together to follow a recipe and make bread – just like Thomas Farriner, the baker from Pudding Lane at the time of the Great Fire of London. The children measured, mixed, kneaded, and shaped their dough, making sure they followed each step in the correct order. This practical activity not only helped us understand how important it is to follow instructions, but also gave us a real link to our history enquiry about the Great Fire of London.

After the bread had cooled, we all ate a slice! It was delicious!

Trunk Theatre Visit – The Great Fire of London

This week we were lucky to welcome Trunk Theatre into school to help launch our new enquiry question: “Is someone always to blame for a disaster?”

Through a wonderful mix of drama, comedy and singing, the theatre group brought the story of the Great Fire of London to life. The children were captivated by the performance and enjoyed joining in with songs and laughter while also learning some fascinating facts about this important historical event.

We discovered many key details, including:

· The fire began in a bakery on Pudding Lane in 1666.

· Houses burned quickly because they were made of wood and thatch and built so close together.

· People tried to stop the fire by using leather buckets, water squirts and fire hooks.

· Samuel Pepys wrote a famous diary that tells us what happened.

· The fire destroyed a large part of London but it also led to new ways of rebuilding the city.

It was a fantastic way to begin our learning journey. The children are already excited to find out more as we continue our enquiry this term.
