Autumn Term
Over this term, we will be developing our handwriting and writing skills through a range of exciting stories and activities. We will explore ‘Old Bear’ by Jane Hissey, write a third-person narrative based on ‘Lost in the Toy Museum’ by David Lucas, and create a non-chronological report linked to our enquiry learning. We will also explore ‘Journey’, ‘Quest’ and ‘Return’ by Aaron Becker, using them to write first-person narratives and setting descriptions. Finally, we will use our DT learning to help us write clear, step-by step instructions for making our very own toy cars!

Reading is an essential part of your child’s learning and progress, and it is important to talk to them about the book to check that they understand it.

Spelling
Throughout the year, children will be taught to read and write 'common exception words'. These are words that don't follow spelling rules and patterns and aren't easy to spell using phonic knowledge. There are often referred to as 'tricky words'.
These words will appear frequently in the books and stories children read, so it is really beneficial for children to begin to confidently recognise them. These words are also words that children will need to use in their writing, so being able to spell them with ease will be really helpful for children.
See below for a list of the year 1 common exception words.
Children will also be taught a variety of spelling rules throughout the year. These can be accessed on spelling shed through a link on the useful website section on our class page. Year 1 spellings can be found on the sage 1 section and your child will have their own log in.
