Phonics Screening Check (PSC)

As part of our commitment to ensuring every child becomes a confident and fluent reader, your child will soon be taking part in the Phonics Screening Check.

This is a short, simple assessment designed to check whether your child can use their phonics skills to read a range of words, including both real and made-up ("alien") words. It typically takes about 5–10 minutes and is conducted one-to-one with a familiar adult in school. The check helps us to identify children who may need additional support with their phonics.

The check is statutory in Year 1 across England and usually takes place in June. Children who do not meet the expected standard will receive additional support and will have the opportunity to take the check again in Year 2.

Please be assured this is nothing for your child to worry about. We do everything we can to make the experience positive and relaxed. In fact, many children see it as a fun activity or a game.

You can help at home by:

  • Encouraging daily reading of both books and simple words.

  • Practising phonics sounds using games or flashcards.

  • Making reading fun and part of your routine.

We’re always happy to support you with ideas or resources—just ask your child’s class teacher if you'd like to know more.

Thank you for your continued support in your child's learning journey.
