Look back with pride and forward with confidence

Week Beginning 9th November

This week we are looking at

Houses and Homes.

We are learning about the what type of house we live in and what other types of houses there are.

Literacy: The book focus is 'The three little Pigs'

(This can be found on youtube)

We will be encouraging the children to listen as we tell the story and then asking them to re-tell it in their own way.

We will role play the story and think about what each character was thinking and feeling.

Ask your child to re tell the story to you. What was their favourite part and why?

Can they think of a different ending?

Can your child draw a map of where the Wolf went?

Linking to our topic and work below in UW, we will be learning about Non Fiction (fact) books and using these to find out about homes around the world.

.

Understanding of the world: We will be learning about houses and homes. What type of house do you live in? is it detached? a terrace? a flat? We will be showing the children many examples of different types of houses.

Later in the week we will be learning at homes around the world. We will be showing the children a big map of the world and naming some countries and looking at the homes they live in.

Maybe you could google Mangolian Yurts, High rise apartments in cities, Stick huts in Uganda, A house on stilts in Cambodia.

The book i will be using is 'HOME' a non fiction book by Oxfam.

We will also be investigating materials. Maybe you could find different materials in your house eg paper, cloth, clingfilm, foil, toilet roll and then drop water on them to see what happens...... Which material would you use to make an umbrella?

Why didn't the Pig's house og straw and sticks stay standing?

Phonics: This week are learning about the initial sounds in words.

Can you make a collection of items with the same initial sound? eg telephone, teddy, toilet roll, tin, tiger etc

(Any initial sound will work as we are learning to hear the sounds not focusing on the letter name.)

Maths: We will be learning about the number 5, and the revising shapes square and circle.

Counting sets to 1-5  and recognising shapes in the environment particularly in buildings.

We will be looking for numbers in the environment, on doors and signs.

Maybe your child could draw their front door and write the correct numeral on it.

We will also be learning about Bigger than and Smaller than.

Can you get a selection of teddies or toys and arrange them in size from the biggest to the smallest.

Ask your child to describe them by their size eg 'This teddy is bigger than this one'.

Creative: This week we will be making houses out of various materials. Making house shapes with lolly sticks and building with bricks and straw and sticks!

In art we will be printing with rectangles and squares to be bricks on a house and encouraging the children to cut out their house.

Maybe you could build with sticks? Paint , print or draw your house.

Other activities we have planned for the provision include:

Building roads and houses with blocks. Threading beads, and threading pasta.

Small world play with different types of houses.

Cutting coloured triangles, Pretending to be Vets in the Cotgrave vets area.

Observing and exploring 'melting'. this week with Ice.

Exploring materials with water.

Enjoy your week and keep safe.

Don't forget to send us any photos! and fill in a WOW leaf if your child does something you're really proud of!

Remember there are other activities on our 'Helping at home' tab too.
