Week Beginning 23rd November
This week we are learning about
The Gruffalo's Child
and Woodland Habitats.
Literacy: The book focus is 'The Gruffalo's Child'

We will be encouraging the children to listen as we tell the story and then asking them to re-tell it in their own way.
We will role play the story and think about what each character was thinking and feeling.
Do you think the Gruffalo's child was scared?
Ask your child to re tell the story to you.
Can they think of a different ending?
Can your child draw a map of where the Gruffalo's child went?
Can your child identify the rhyme parts in the story?
Linking to our topic and work below in UW, we will be learning about Non Fiction (fact) books and using these to find out about what animals live in Woodlands.
Understanding of the world: We will be learning about Woodlands and Woodland Animals
We will introduce the word HABITAT.
We will be learning about why we need to protect our woodlands and look after the animals.
In relation to the story, we will be investigating Shadows! If you have a torch at home, have a go too!
Phonics: This week are learning about RHYME.
Can you make a collection of items with the same rhyme ending? cat, bat, rat, hat
Can your child identify the odd one out of a set cat, bat, dog, rat....
Do you have any stories at home with rhyme in?
Maybe sing some nursery rhymes and get your child to fill in the end rhyme.
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great .........
Maths: We will be learning about the number 5, and building with shapes.
Counting sets to 1-5 and recognising shapes in the environment particularly in animal drawings.
We will be learning about Longer than and Shorter than.
If you have playdough at home, maybe you could make snakes and compare their sizes?
We will be learning about maths in real contexts.
We are also learning about Day and Night.
We will be ordering our day and talking about routines.
This links to our topic and animals being Nocturnal.
Creative: This week we will be making nests from various materials.
We will be making animal footprints with paint and with shapes.
We will be exploring with torches and making Dens in the dark.
Maybe you could make a den at home and use torches.
Other activities we have planned for the provision include:
Building dens for different sized Dinosaurs with blocks. Making playdough animal prints and playdough nests with sticks.
Small world play with the characters from the story.
Threading coloured snakes with pasta , Pretending to be the characters in the story in the new Gruffalo Cave.
Playing with 'snow' and woodland animals.
Making Gruffalo cookies in the mud kitchen.
Making City Scape night scenes with numicon and with torches.
