Week 2 - w/c 27th April

Do they float or sink?!

We need you to investigate materials around your home to see if they float or sink.

Think about things in the bathroom or kitchen - what can you collect? How might you test if they float? Can you write a list of which materials float and which materials sink?

Using this information, can you make a boat or raft that you could use to escape a treasure island?! Remember that it needs to float!

What you will need:

  • a tub filled with water (big enough to test your materials - maybe a washing up bowl or mixing bowl?)
  • a variety of materials to test (examples: tupperware box, tin foil, a cork, a plastic bottle, a toilet/kitchen roll holder, toys, pencil crayons etc.)
  • a piece of paper and a pencil

See the pictures below to help with ideas and please share your finished boats/rafts with us - we'd love to see them!

Challenge question (look at my photos first!) - if my sponge soaked up water, why would I put it inside my boat?
