Week 11 - wb 6th July

Here you will find your daily English lessons. Watch the videos for each lesson and complete the task set underneath. Make sure you send any work you complete to our Year 5 email

This week you are going to invent your own Greek-style myth. You will need to think carefully about the characters, setting and the plot.


Lesson 1

Task: Design your character and setting, draw it then describe it. 


Draw your invented character and setting then describe it using powerful adjectives and figurative language. Think carefully about the characters and setting in Theseus and the Minotaur and Perseus and Medusa if you get stuck.


  • What does the character look like?
  • How do they move?
  • How do they behave?
  • What makes them a mythical beast?
  • Where does your villainous character live
  • How does the setting reflect the character? (e.g. Medusa lives in a dark cave because she is part reptile and can't be around humans)

Send us your labelled drawings of your characters and settings to our Year 5 email, we can't wait to see what incredible things you've designed! 


If you want an extra challenge, see if you can answer some of the questions below.

  • Why is your setting for the beast appropriate for your design of the character? Explain why. 
  • Why do you think myths are typically set in Ancient Greece?

  • What method of transport have you chosen for your character on their journey? Why did you make this choice?
  • Select a one of your vocabulary choices used to describe one of your settings. Why have you chosen this word to describe your setting? Think about the impact on the reader.
  • Why do you think myths typically have a beast that is part human, part animal?
  • Explain in detail why you have selected each of the characteristic for your beast. For example, why does your beast have horns like a bull?
  • Select a piece of figurative language you have used to describe your beast. Why have you chosen this phrase to describe your character? Think about the impact on the reader.


Lesson 2

Task: Plan your writing for your invented Greek myth.


Watch the video then use the headings on the planning document (thinking carefully about the structure of a myth) to plan the key events in your invented myth, ready to start writing.

Look back at the two model texts you've had to give you ideas. Make sure you follow the correct structure of a Greek myth that we've looked at and have a look at the teaching slides below for a checklist of important features. Watch Mr Durrant model how to get started.
