Phase 5
Phase 5
In phase 5 children will broaden their knowledge of graphemes and phonemes for use in reading and spelling.
- They will learn that some already taught phonemes can be represented by more than one grapheme
For example, children will already know 'igh' as in 'night' but will also be introduced to 'ie' as in 'pie' and 'i-e' as in 'like'
- They will learn that certain graphemes can have an alternative pronunciation
For example, children will already know the phoneme for 'y' as in 'yes' but will also be introduced to its alternative
pronunciation of 'i' as in 'by' and 'e' as in 'very'.
Children will also continue to learn new tricky words.
