Phase 2

Phase 2 

 

In this phase children will have experienced and will continue to experience a wealth of listening activities including songs, rhymes and stories and will now begin to focus on GPC activities. GPC is introduced in a structured way that will support children in understanding the association between letter sounds and their written representation. 

 

In phase 2, the following grapheme/phonemes are introduced. There are usually four taught a week, with the fifth phonics lesson introducing a tricky word.

Children will be provided with lots of encouragement and opportunities to practise their new knowledge of GPC. As they develop this knowledge they will be taught to read by blending sounds in CVC words and identifying and segmenting sounds in CVC words for spelling.
