Fractions

Fractions (Introduction)

This is just a quick video outlining the terminology which we use when discussing fractions. The video breaks down the components of a fraction and the key principle that when looking at fractions the children realise it’s looking at a variety of parts that combined together create a whole.

What is a half?

In this video we look in detail at the idea of a half. The key concept for this video for children is that they are aware when talking about a half this means 2 parts which make a whole.

What is a quarter?

In this video we continue looking at fractions to explore the ins and outs of quarters. The key concept for quarters is that children are able to identify that quarters mean 4 parts which make a whole. Furthering this is that 1 quarter is just 1 part out of 4, 2 quarters is 2 parts out of 4 and 3 quarters is 3 parts out of 4.

What is a third?

In this video we build on our knowledge of fractions by looking in detail at thirds. The key concept here is that the children can identify the numerator and the denominator in a third and how this changes when we alter the numerator.

Fractions of amounts (1 half)

Building on from the intro vid we take a look at finding fractions of amounts (looking only at halves). Get ready for a very “tasty” method to really help your children understand and remember how to tackle these problems.

Fractions of amounts (1 quarter)

In this video we continue to look at finding a fraction of an amount building on the previous videos. The key concept here is that the children can recognise the relationship between the numerator and denominator and how this helps us use a method to find the answer when we are given a number. Remember, practice makes perfect!

Fractions of amounts (1 third)

In this video we look at working out how to find a third of an amount given. The key concept here like with any other fraction of amount is that the children understand the relationship between the numerator and denominator and how this effects the amount they are wanting to find. Time to get those pizzas in the oven!

Fractions of amounts (1/2 and 1/4)

This video helps to explain what is the same and what is different about 1/2 and 1/4.

Finding fractions of amounts (non-unit)

This video explore the differences between a unit fraction and a non-unit fraction.

Non unit fractions of amounts (thirds)

This video extends on what we already know about non unit fractions. We can use this to find fractions of amounts involving thirds.
