Science - Lesson 1 (07.01.2021)

LO: To investigate how objects move on different surfaces

Watch the video clip below. See if you can think of different examples of 2 surfaces rubbing against each other, you could make a list of them.

You will now be investigating how objects move on different surfaces.

Choose an item you have at home that you could use to investigate with, it could be a toy car, a ball or even a plastic plate that you could slide on a surface.

Once you have decided on your object you will need to choose 3-4 different surfaces to test the object on, for example a wooden table, the carpet or a rug, fabric, outside on the grass/patio, a book etc.

Now make your prediction.

Remember a prediction is a good guess about what you think the results will be. Which surface do you think the object will move the best on? Why?

You are now ready to start your investigation.

Make sure you carry out a fair test. Remember, a fair test is when we only change one variable- this will be the surface, everything else will remain the same.

Place your object on each surface one at a time and see if the object moves. Does it move easily? Does it barely move at all?

Decide which surface works the best, . e.g. the one that the object could move on the easiest/the quickest.

Now draw a picture of how you carried out the investigation. We would love to see your pictures, please email them to your class teacher.

Now have a go at this friction quiz.
