Wasn't our trip to Perlethorpe amazing?
Fantastic weather and great activities. We learned a lot about rivers and it was a super way to start our topic with a bang!

What can we say about your fantastic homework?
We have been so impressed with the enormous effort you have all put into your homeworks. Well done. I really look forward to Wednesdays and seeing how hard you have all worked.

Welcome back !
We hope that you have all enjoyed a fantastic family holiday and are excited about 2013 in Year 5. We are now we are all such experts on the events on World War Two, it is time to change our focus. This term we are going to be tackling some tricky questions in our topic about dilemmas.. Should I.... Shouldn't I?
We have some exciting things lined up for you including lots of sport- we'll be swimming on Tuesdays and we have some fab coaches from Nottingham Rugby Club coming into work with us on Wednesday afternoons. Look out for Candleby Life as the recruitment starts next week. There are more ipad apps loaded and ready to help us with our learning and some great Science work exploring sight and seeing.
So watch this space... and in the meantime here's a dilemma for you to think about..
ould you sit next to Bradley Chalkers
Well, it's an amazing date as Ben has been reminding me. I wonder when the next date with repetitive numbers will be... I know I won't be around to see it, but will you?
It's nearly the end of our first term in Year 5 and it's been a busy and fun one.
We are always proud when people comment on the behaviour of our children and lots of people in school, as well as our visitors tell us how impressed they were with our production and with your behaviour around school. Fantastic!
I think you can all write to Santa now and tell him you have been really.. really good.
We've been busy thinking about 2013 and planning exciting things. We are really looking forward to going swimming on Tuesdays and really hoping that some family members will be able to come and be spotters for us. Nottingham Rugby are coming on Fridays to do some coaching for us, and in between that we are going to be packing in some really fun ways of learning. Candleby Life will be starting again so start thinking about the skills you think you would like to develop.
Have a Happy Christmas!

Days till our Keep Calm and Carry On performance... 1 !!!
We have been so impressed by the incredible effort you have all made to learn lines, remember actions, write scripts and sing songs. Every single person has made a massive effort and it is really nice to see some people who haven't always wanted to be in the limelight really wanting to have major speaking parts.
Did you know that there are some special awards called Tonys which are given to famous actors and actresses each year? We will be making our own awards after our performance but we will need a different name. We could have the Wheatleys.. or the Wilkes.. or the Kites? Come and whisper your ideas to us and we will listen carefully. Perhaps you can start spotting people that you think deserve special awards.. perhaps for being the most consistent performer or the bravest performer.. or the best team player. What other awards should we have? Write down your ideas and we will get them ready for our awards celebration.
Finally so that we know you are reading this here is a question for you to research:-
How many allied aircraft were lost during the Battle of Britain?
Write your answer on a slip of paper and tuck it onto my laptop like a spy would and we will see who is the first person to get the correct answer and of course 25 raffle tickets!
Our trip to Nottingham Castle on Friday was a great success, even though we were a little bit chilly. We kept on Smiling through the war. During our day we learned to do the Lambeth Walk, to jitterbug, and to sing songs to keep us occupied in an air raid. We sat in an Anderson shelter and experienced the noises of a real air raid. We found out about life with rationing and worked out how little sweets we would have had and how much cabbage we might have had to eat. Here are some pictures and videos of the day.
One of the best parts for me was when a gentleman at the Castle stopped me to say how fantastic you all looked, how well behaved you were and what a credit to your parents and the school you are. I agree! WELL DONE 5S- please make sure you say a huge thank you to the people who helped you get dressed up. Remember not to get rid of the costumes as we will need them later on in the term for our production.
We've had great fun today listening to this song by Will-i-am and a few furry friends. We are going to use it as our class song because it has such a strong message about what you can achieve if you believe in yourself. Listen to the words.
Our year group motto is " getting better altogether" so we are going to be finding fun ways of improving as learners, as team members and as a class.
We have some exciting things to help us learn. Here's a little clue in case any of the parents don't believe us...
Anyway just to prove you are reading this, the first person to read this and to whisper the magic word in my ear gets 20 raffle tickets.
The magic word is.....
Twirl...... of course!
Keep reading! More updates will follow.
